It’s all about the therapeutic relationship

Therapy is a deeply personal process, so how you feel with your therapist matters right? Right!

All of the work that we do here at Minnesota Attachment Collective is rooted in attachment (hence, the name). And healing attachment wounds comes from the therapeutic relationship. Yes, of course therapeutic techniques as well as practices that you connect to outside of session can play a big role, and, those are likely to feel most supportive through a relationship that feels supportive too!

When you are starting therapy, it is normal to feel a bit uncomfortable. After all, you’re opening up about deeply personal things with a complete stranger. And, the hope is that as you continue to work with your therapist, you learn to trust that the therapeutic relationship is a safe place to be uniquely yourself.

You’re going to feel more comfortable sharing the tough stuff with someone who you know is not going to judge you, and instead will appreciate your vulnerability and join you as you dig into the work. This allows your experience to feel less isolating- which then allows you to feel like you have support as you grow.

The therapeutic relationship is a perfect place to practice vulnerability. Through practice, vulnerability can becomes something that is a little bit easier to tap into. Eventually, this practice will help you to communicate your feelings and needs in other relationships in your life. No, this doesn’t mean that others in your life will serve your therapist’s role, but it means that you will have multiple layers of support and connection in your life.

So, how do you find this good fit?

It may take a little research and a little trial and error. Allow yourself to be picky when you are searching out your therapist. As you are reading a therapist’s bio on their website- how do you feel? Does it feel like a cookie-cutter statement about therapy, or does it feel like something that resonates with you? When you hop on a 15-minute consult with a potential therapist, what shows up for you? It makes sense that you will feel anxious, but do you also feel seen?

The best therapeutic fit will be different for everyone, but looking for a therapist who shows that they value holding space for you can be a great place to start! If you are in Minnesota and looking for a therapist who prioritizes the therapeutic relationship, you’ve come to the right place! We specialize in attachment and see the relationship as an important foundation in therapy. Check out our providers here to see if any of them resonate with you.
